COLLOQUIAL ARABIC

COLLOQ

Literally meaning “everyday or colloquial language,” Darija refers to any of the varieties of colloquial Arabic spoken in the Maghreb. It is used for everyday speech, in TV plays, dramas, some advertising, and social networking.

Most of its vocabulary is derived from MSA, with extensive borrowings from Berber (Tamazight) substrates and the languages of the European former colonizers (French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian). Darija continually evolves by incorporating technical words from English or French. Until recently, it was exclusively an oral language.
